The Number One Rule of a successful drummer
Posted by Jason | Under Holiday Life Monday Jun 23, 2008Inspiration and aspiration.. compassion and passion.. what is the difference between them?
This person explains it all.. Ok.. just for this person I shall say out his name..
Dom Famularo
what did he use to explains everything? One thing..
Drum
BEFORE I BEGIN.. BE WARN THIS IS GOING TO BE A VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY
LONG POST..
SO Dont bother reading if you are not interested in drum
yep.. today, She and I went for a drum clinic at YMS Arts Centre FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME
and we enjoyed a great deal of benefits ranging from materialistic souvenir like poster to valuable knowledge that cant be measured with anything in this world.
He’s a very humorous guy too! I guess that’s why we got interested.. he shared with us many things out of which I’m going to just talk about some here without his humorous bassist jokes
I would like to exclaim that the following contents shows what I REMEMBER from the clinic and If I got some wrong information, I would like to apologize for the inconvenience caused and that no defamation should occur to the mentioned parties.
He said..
There is 3 kinds of people in this world.
1) The wave makers
People who create the waves and ride on it~!
2) The Wave Riders
People who saw the wave and decided to ride on it too!
3) The lost souls still searching for the beach!
Think about it yourself…
Interesting.. I think this is a very good example of not just in a drummers life. But it’s a philosophy that could be applied to almost everything..
The best is of course to be the wave maker..
CREATE the wave and be at the top! Start the trend! Make people follow you! That would be the best… How can we achieve this is another question.
And then the Wave Riders..
I have to admit it but I hate to be a wave rider.. yet even though i’m hating it.. I’m a wave rider in life who is trying to create a wave!
But then, what he said was that at least we knew there is a wave and decided to ride on it, thus still able to catch up with the trend.
Well.. Ok.. agree to a certain extend..
then the worst.. LoL
People who are still finding the beach ( Or Bitch?) !
So which category did you fall into? YOU decide your OWN LIFE
Followed by which, he asked the audience,
what is the bottom line of arts?
Someone said Hunger LoL
Well.. Eating would be the bottom line of hunger
the answer is…
Expression
this word.. it struck my heart… I started to realize that all along, I’ve been playing my drum as according to the song.. and even if I do my own fill in, it’s like what Steward said.. “Very Generic.. A universal fill in for all songs”
and I agree!
I realize I need to create my own form of drum designs!
He further showed to us what he meant by playing a simple piece of track that he created for some very cool drummer that I cant remember his name
When he started playing with the music, somehow.. I was moved!
Suddenly, I could feel him! It’s like the music came alive! I cant explain the feeling.. but I felt very touched…
The way he played it with his eyes closed.. as though traveled into another dimension.. the Drum World playing with just his feeling…
Followed by his sticks movement and legs movement.. everything was very clear.. the music mesmerized me..
I felt Heavenly for a while…
Then the music stops..
and I was being brought back to reality in a slow ride.. Why is it a slow ride?
The music did not end abruptly.. but it ended with a very nice balance between rythm and melody..
Then he told us..
DRUMMING is a form of arts.. and this form of arts is how WE express our most inner feeling.
He illustrated this by telling us about this experience where he visited the museum.
There is this one particular spot which is very crowded.. everyone is going..
“Woooo”
“WOW~!~!”
“*whistle*
Being excited to be in the museum, he squeezed his way to the front of the crowd to see the painting..
All he see is just circles after circles.. It started with very dark circles at the bottom and as it goes up, it become smaller and thinner in the outlines.. then come down again and up again..
He was like..
Water the flower?!
“Who the hell made this painting?! Why is someone wooing and wowing over circles?! My grandma could have draw that!”
“How much does this cost?”
Someone said a few hundred thousand..
“WHAT?!”
Unbelievable!
Then the manager of the museum came over and ask him, Do you know what does this picture mean?
He said.. Of course!! It’s just circles!
Then she started explaining..
Long Long ago.. there is this person who live in an area where painting was prohibited..
he hid his painting under the bed and the very first time he learnt painting.. he drew one circle at the bottom corner of the canvas..
then he will practise drawing circles on some other paper and when he felt he got better, he came back to this piece of canvas paper and drew another circle just above the first circle with lighter outlines.
Then he does the same thing for I dont remember how many years..
Then he left this place and move on to another place where painting is allowed and he started drawing more circles.. then a tragic happened..
His wife passed away.. Feeling very sad.. he started drawing the circles going downwards every now and then until it reached the bottom and of course the circle gets darker and darker.
Then.. slowly.. he was able to overcome his grieved and his life got better.. thus the circle starts going up again and it gets brighter and brighter.. and 2 days after he drew his last circles.. He was on his deathbed..
and finally he passed away at the age of 84..(or somewhere around there)
This Circles is actually his life story..
after that… he also went “wow~!”
After hearing this.. there is something in me that seems to awake.. I want to explore more about this feeling.. this emotions that Dom is able to make me feel.. I hope I will have an answer soon…
So after that he talks about compassion and passion..
What is passion?
Aiya.. everyone knows lah hor?
But what is compassion?
I’m very surprised that at that point of time.. I realize I dont really know the meaning..
After a while, someone gave the answer..
Passion is about knowing the others needs and giving it to them
Again.. this trigger my feelings.. What feelings? I HAVE NO IDEA!
But I know something in me has been triggered..
yes.. It’s like a light shone down on me and now I see drum in a whole new area..
After that he performed some solo.. He said.. he dont know how is he going to start and how is he going to end.. he’s just going to let his body move and let the drum speaks for him..
so as he sat down on the chair, he started with the bass.. and slowly adds in more instrument..
As I look at him play.. I can really see the passion in him.. It’s so great!! It appears i’m not the only one with this opinion, but the audience there too. But I believe some people might say he’s crazy because the way he plays the drum is really very dramatic. But I’ve learnt to appreciate it and I love it!
15 minutes of solos filled the room.. I love it so much.. I saw how he transmits from one pattern to another without any harsh switch and the music flow smoothly..
I saw how he made use of everything on the drumset to make music..
and believe me.. It sounds very nice.. he played the drumset in ways that I’ve never thought of it before..
using the metal stand.. the bottom part of the clash.. and everywhere.
After the solo end.. he told us there is 2 rules we need to remember..
If we walk out of the clinic today remembering this 2 rules.. our drum life is going to change quite drastically..
Rule Number One
There is no rule
Rule Number Two
Follow rule number one
Wow.. who could forget such an advise?
i’ll say.. this advise really seems useful..
and I’m sure it’s going to be in me for a while now..
As the clinic is approaching the end, it’s finally time for FAQ.
Someone ask..
How does he teach his student!
He said.. He want his student to go in get inspired and come out being aspired!
So what exactly does it mean?
Inspired means getting motivated by others
Aspired means getting motivated by yourself!
And with Aspiration comes Self Discipline.
Yes..this is what he said.
I’m glad to hear it actually.. because it shows I’m still currently on the right track
SO with the questions ended, his talk is over and time for prize giving~! Many posters are being thrown out at the audience and I happened to caught one!
She got hers too! LoL
then.. the lucky prize..
one lucky guy get to walk away with a DOUBLE BASS PEDAL!
AND another one get to walk away with ONE SNARE DRUM!!
Ahhh~!~!~!~! LoL
Ah well.. I wasn’t one of them though
But I shall say I’m thankful and satisfied with just the poster
Thank God for that! lol
With this.. the whole drum clinic end.. and tomorrow I shall assume work and back to reality.. LoL
Ok.. time to sleep.. Good Night everyone! If Welna got post up the poster in her blog.. then I shall copy from hers and show it to you all
Kk~!~! Nights Out!
~* Aspired!
